Saying goodbye…

Posted by mesa in Texas on January 2, 2007

Gerald Ford is coming home today.

I was born in Grand Rapids and graduated from East Grand Rapids High School, just a few blocks from where President Ford lived most of his life before retiring to California. Folks in Grand Rapids feel a special affection for this man that goes back long before he became President.

I was involved with the dedication and opening of the Gerald R. Ford Museum in downtown Grand Rapids and had a chance to meet him a few times. He was always openly friendly, humble and happy to talk to a college kid (at the time) with an interest in politics.

God Bless, President Gerald R. Ford.

Update: It is an interesting feeling watching the funeral on television right now, the church is barely two blocks from where I used to live. My buddy from high school lived right next to the Grace Episcopal Church and we used to do doughnuts in the snow in their parking lot with our cars. Really brings it all home, watching a presidential funeral procession move through the lot that we had fun goofing around in.

Gerald Ford meant a lot to our city and the community. It looks the the entire city of Grand Rapids turned out today to line the procession route and show their respect.

Talk about lucky…

Another weird news story out of Michigan, this one within two miles of my house.

Man awakes in garbage truck, rescued after cell phone call

OAK PARK, Mich. (AP) — A man who fell asleep in a trash container awoke inside a garbage truck that was about to compact its load but was saved after making a frantic cell phone call to police, authorities say.

Police in the Detroit suburb of Oak Park got the call Thursday and were able to find the truck before the Detroit man was crushed.

“He said, ‘I fell asleep in a Dumpster and a trash truck has now picked up the Dumpster and emptied the load in the back of the truck,’” police Lt. Mike Pousak told The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak. “He said, ‘I don’t know where I’m at or what truck I’m in.’”

Hobos have cell phones now?

Hail to the Victors!

Staying in tonight and celebrating the New Year at home to be fresh for the Rose Bowl.

Go Blue!

Update: Well, that sucked. When did Cooper start coaching for the Wolverines?

Everything we did right all season, all the talent — didn’t get a chance to put their hands on the ball tonight until it was too late.

You can’t score if you don’t try. USC is a great team, but they beat us on the same plays that were available for us. And that we used all season.

Frustrating.

I’ve been a huge Carr supporter since day one. But, Lloyd got schooled today like a kindergartner who still needs to raise his hand to use the bathroom — but then it’s too late. It was hard to watch.

We need a new coach.

I never thought I would say that, but the better team did not win tonight. An average quarterback had the advantage of a defense that was on it’s heels all night because their coaches let them down. USC has two amazing receivers, they worked hard and did their jobs.

Michigan decided to not go down field — at all.

Everything that worked all year — don’t even try. Send Hart up the middle. Sure, get cute and use the tight ends once in a while. But, after five sacks in the first half — give their fucking linebackers and corners something to think about before they take a straight line at your quarterback — every damn play.

Michigan is too big a program to go through this. And we are not as stupid as Notre Dame to hire a left over high school coach — twice. Hopefully.

USC taught us a lesson tonight.

I hope we learned it.
