U.S., Iraqi forces kill 250 militants in Najaf

NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) – U.S. and Iraqi forces killed 250 gunmen in a fierce battle involving U.S. tanks and helicopters on the outskirts of the Shi’ite holy city of Najaf on Sunday, a senior Iraqi police officer said.

The day-long battle was continuing after nightfall, Colonel Ali Nomas told Reuters, as tens of thousands of pilgrims converged on the nearby city of Kerbala for the climax of the Ashura commemorations.

A U.S. helicopter was shot down in the fighting, Iraq security sources said.

When the ROE let us go after the insurgents, jihadis and Mahdi folks, it is no contest.

If the hate America first politicians on the left would stop trying to force us into defeat, stories like this would be a daily occurance and a peaceful Iraq would be in our near future. Instead, our enemies are emboldened by the defeatist attitudes of the democrats and keep pouring cannon fodder into Iraq.

Kerry said the Bush administration has failed in addressing a number of foreign policy issues.

“When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto, when we are irresponsibly slow in moving toward AIDS in Africa, when we don’t advance and live up to our own rhetoric and standards, we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy,” Kerry said.

“So we have a crisis of confidence in the Middle East — in the world, really. I’ve never seen our country as isolated, as much as a sort of international pariah for a number of reasons as it is today.”…

Kerry’s memory is as selective as his choice in billionaire widowers, the Kyoto accord was first rejected under Clinton.

Economists from the Clinton White House now concede that complying with Kyoto’s mandatory reductions in greenhouse gases would be difficult — and more expensive to American consumers than they thought when they were in charge.

As for the Africa claim:

No other country has spent more money at any other time on AIDS research and support to Africa than during the Bush administration — not even close. The Clinton administration did almost nothing. That would have taken the impossible task for Clinton of taking a stance on something.
