The World’s Weirdest Engineering Disaster

On a fateful day in 1980 a group of oil drillers were working in a shallow lake in Louisiana probing for oil. A miscalculation sent their drill straight into a large salt mine shaft below the lake’s surface. The hole started at just over a foot in diameter but rapidly widened as the water from the lake above washed away the salt around it. What started out quite simply ended in disaster that no one could have predicted.

Yikes. I had never heard about this before.

Those of us from Chicago have first hand experience with what can go wrong when you start poking holes under large bodies of water.

I’m homesick

Posted by mesablue on January 25, 2008

I used to live about two blocks from this place.

The producers of the show tried to make this into a social commentary. I never saw anything but good humored fun. Plus, they ALWAYS start it.

What do you expect from a bunch of drunks?

Jay R. Grodner achieves Internet immortality

Posted by mesablue on January 4, 2008

His name is now an Internet verb.

As in, to grodner oneself.

Grodner [’ghræd n3r] (v):
1) To aggressively self-destruct through felony vandalism crossed with a sense of invulnerability and entitlement.
2) To be-prick oneself in public while flashing the victim card.

Scumbag of the Year makes the Chicago Tribune

Posted by mesablue on January 3, 2008

It took a few days, but the story of shitbird extraoardinaire, Jay R. Grodner, caught the attention of the press.

John Kass covered the story today in the Chicago Tribune.

I’m going way beyond fair use, I can’t find any part that I could leave out. Kass talked to more of the people involved than we’ve heard from before — except for the bad actor himself, who remains hidden.

As of this evening, this was the most viewed story on the Chicago Tribune web site.

Jay R. Grodner is officially — infamous.

Marine Sgt. Michael McNulty — now on his way to Iraq for his second tour of duty in the war — took meticulous care of his car.

It is a black two-door BMW, an expensive ride for a young Marine from Chicago, but then, McNulty didn’t exactly join up for the big paycheck and luxury vacations.

The 26-year-old McNulty was a trader at the exchange and enlisted in the Reserves after 9/11. He babied his car so much that he had military vanity plates along with a sticker in his window that let people know that a Marine or a Marine supporter drove that car.

But someone didn’t like the Marine sticker, or the pro-military plates, and decided to stage an anti-war protest, with a key or hard piece of metal, on the shiny black finish of Sgt. McNulty’s car that caused $2,400 in damage.

“It’s a really nice car. It’s in perfect condition. He keeps it meticulous. And he was going to sell it,” said Sgt. McNulty’s friend, Tom Sullivan, a college buddy from Loyola University.

The last time Sgt. McNulty was in Iraq, he worked a .50-caliber machine gun from a Humvee. Now that he’s going back, he really doesn’t need a shiny black BMW that shows dust.

“There wasn’t a scratch on his car,” Sullivan said.

But there is one now.

It is a big scratch, a particularly long scratch in that black paint, a scratch stretching from the rear driver’s side around the back, across the trunk, then up to the passenger’s side.

If you have a car, and parked it on the street, surely you’ve thought about what an angry key could do to it.

According to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, it wasn’t an accident, but a deliberate key job, not done by some kid or street thug, but by a Chicago lawyer who apparently can’t stand the military.

Private attorney Jay R. Grodner, 55, of Chicago has been charged with a class A misdemeanor — criminal damage to property — punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine, said Andy Conklin, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office.

Late Wednesday, I reached Sgt. McNulty, who declined to comment for the paper but confirmed the facts in the police report.

And I wanted to get Grodner’s side of it because he’s been accused but not convicted of anything. So we called all the Grodner numbers we could find — home and business — including those on the police report and others in the suburbs and Chicago. Many were disconnected, and his cell phone voice mail was full.

I’d like to ask him two questions:

Why?

And, are you proud?

“McNulty was just coming to pick me up for breakfast, because he was going to training just before deployment,” Sullivan said of that morning on Dec. 1 in Rogers Park.

There are several one-way streets near Sullivan’s home, but McNulty missed the turn, and rather than drive two or three blocks around, he put the car in reverse and backed up a hundred or so feet. He pulled up in front of his friend’s house, rang the bell and Sullivan came downstairs. McNulty then turned around and saw Grodner’s hands on his black car.

“Mike says, ‘Hey, what are you doing to my car? Open up your hand!’” Sullivan told us. “And [Grodner] goes, ‘[Blank] you! Just because you’re in the military you don’t run the roost!’”

There were allegedly many more epithets and cuss words, some allegedly applied to the United States Marine Corps, to the U.S. armed forces and to Sgt. McNulty himself.

“Quite frankly, you don’t even look like a soldier. You’re a small little [blank],” Grodner said according to Sullivan.

This last bit really bothers William McNulty, who is Sgt. McNulty’s brother, and he called me.

“My brother should be commended for not just smashing that guy’s windpipe right there for all the stuff he said about our military, and the insults,” William McNulty said. “Instead, my brother called the police, as he should have.”

According to the police report I read, other investigative accounts and interviews, Grodner was upset to have been accused of purposely scratching the car. So upset, that he accused his accusers of being anti-Semitic.

The Chicago police officer responding to the call didn’t take the accusation seriously, according to the report, because he couldn’t justify it. And Sgt. McNulty’s brother and Sullivan say it is outrageous and nonsensical.

“The officer wasn’t going to hear this kind of talk. He put the kibosh on the whole thing,” Sullivan said. “So [Grodner] became apologetic.”

According to the police report, “The offender denied scratching the victim’s vehicle, but did admit to rubbing past it.”

Rubbing past it? I guess it all depends on what the definition of “rubbing” is.

That’s where it is now, awaiting another court date, set for Jan. 18, after Sgt. McNulty refused to back off and drop the charges in earlier court appearances.

Lawyers know how to drag things out, with continuance after continuance, stalling until complaining witnesses get tired and move on.

But Marines on their way to war don’t seek continuances.

And all Sgt. McNulty wanted was a little respect, and the chance to sell that car of his, without a scratch.

Wow, Grodner turns out to be an even bigger scumbag than it seemed originally. Pompous, arrogant, obnoxious and now obviously — pretty fucking stupid.

Grodner, if you haven’t figured it out yet, you are completely fucked. You screwed the pooch this time. The best part is — you did it to yourself.

Bluster and hubris are not your friend. This time, you get to bend over and grab your ankles. What is the correct term for a self-inflicted ass pounding?

BOHICA, baby!

I look forward to reporting your sentencing.

UPDATE: CUBS WIN!!! NL CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPS!!!

Back to the Windy City for the weekend. The Cubs will clinch — hopefully. And, I’ll be there. Unfortunately, they won’t. They are finishing the season on the road. Still, it should be fun to hang out and have a few dozen beers in Wrigleyville during the games. Clark & Addison will be crazy when they wrap it up. I was there in 2003, 1998 and 1989. It would be amazing if they could make a run at it this year and avoid the 100 year hype that we’re going to hear all next year.

Then I’m off to St. Louis for a few days of business type stuff and then, who knows — maybe back to Chicago for a playoff game or three.

Oh, and I gots to get me an Italian Beef sammich.

I am not one to dance on a grave,

Posted by Wickedpinto on September 27, 2007

However a great many people will be doing so now because bill wirtz is dead.

I don’t think most hoped for his death, however, I think most hockey fan’s came to the realizition that the hawks would not be able to get the local recognition they deserved, until bill either sold the team (unlikely) or until he died.

It’s a shame he died, however, his death is probably one of the best things to happen to chicago hockey.

It was DISGRACEFULL how he restricted the team, and ‘hawks fans learned to hate him, so most every Chicago hockey fan cheered his death.

It’s a shame that he was that STUPID! that noone could see him as a human but as nothing more than an “uncle moneybags” prick in the way he managed the business of the ‘Hawks.

It’s a shame he’s dead, but honestly?  For hockey fans?  thank god he is, he was a horrible horrible owner, without a doubt the worst owner in all sports.

Rest well bill, but nothing that follows has anything to do with you.

be at peace, but also, be alone, the ‘hawks most definately will not be your legacy, seeing as how you went out of your way to destroy them.

OUT.

Global warming, you fickle thing…

Posted by mesablue on September 16, 2007

Saturday’s record chill earliest here in 117 years

Autumn paid an early visit to much of the Midwest Saturday as a multitude of temperature records fell by the wayside.

The city’s official 39(degrees) record low at O’Hare not only broke the old record of 40(degrees) for Sept. 15 set in 1985, but it was also the city’s earliest in the season sub-40(degrees) reading in 117 years since a 39(degrees) low on Sept. 13, 1890. Some other record lows set at nearby locales included Rockford (35(degrees)), Springfield (35(degrees)), Moline (36(degrees)) and Madison (32(degrees)). Just to the west, both Cedar Rapids (31(degrees)) and Dubuque (32(degrees)) experienced their earliest freezes on record.

It was COLD last night.

When is this global warming thing going to pay off? I’m doing my part by driving a big ol’ gas guzzling SUV, but this is taking too long.

Where can I buy some carbon debits?

Global Warming

Posted by Wickedpinto on August 24, 2007

I think that Al Gore is flying in circles over the midwest right now.  Here is a list of the flash flood and sever weather warnings for the region, and here’s a report on some of the aftermath, and predictions for later tonight.

I tell you it was pretty awesome, I just finish up the apology post for slacking, I hear a little rain hitting the sidewalk outside.  I knew there was gonna be thunderstorms coming through so I sit there looking out the screen door, then after about a minute of rainfall, theres a big ass flash of lighting that turned the day into day, and BAM! Wind comes through blowing the downpour so hard that the raindrops are torn apart into a thick swirling mist.  70-80 MPH winds is what they say it was, and it knocked out power.

and then BAM! I hear something thought it was lighting, but then I half of my neighbors tree sitting on his neighbors fence and where the car normaly would have been, only lasted about 20 minutes for the first one, the rain died down, but two more times the world went crazy just like in Al Gores models, and there was a constant bombardment of thunderstorms throughout the night.

Naturaly I was concerned about everyones well being, so I called my local pizza place and had them send some 17 year old kid out in the insane weather to deliver me a pizza, cuz thats just how I roll.

Fortunately Dennis Quaid arrived today and restored power.

The outages were major, the 500K number mentioned in the article only applies to illinois I think, there were another 350K in NW IN, the local power company’s list of downages covered pretty much every town city or county within 50+ miles of Chicago. It was pretty damn cool.

Stupid reporter tricks

Posted by mesablue on July 10, 2007

This one takes the cake.

Amy Jacobson, a reporter for NBC 5 in Chicago, was caught on tape frolicking poolside in a bikini at the home of Craig Stebic. Stebic’s wife, Lisa, has been missing since April 30th. Jacobson has been covering the story. According to local authorities, Lisa Stebic was trying to evict Craig from her home on the day she disappeared.

Police suspect foul play and have been combing the area searching for Lisa. Dead or alive.

Ever the grieving husband, Craig threw a poolside party and invited Jacobson who attended — with her children.

Jacobson out at WMAQ

WMAQ-Ch. 5 reporter Amy Jacobson negotiated her exit from the station Tuesday after video surfaced on a rival station showing her at a poolside gathering at the home of Craig Stebic, whose wife’s disappearance Jacobson had been covering.

The news staff was informed of her departure In a memo Tuesday afternoon from Vice President of News Frank Whittaker and News Director Camille Edwards. “We are sorry to tell you that Amy Jacobson is leaving NBC 5 News, effective immediately,” according to the memo, which was obtained by the Tribune.

Officials at WBBM-Ch. 2, who had been debating since Friday whether they should air the tape, aired clips on Tuesday morning and posted a report on the station’s Web site after the tape’s existence was reported in the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times.

The tape appears to show Jacobson in a bikini top with a towel around her waist, as well as her children, at the Stebic home along with Stebic. Channel 2, which said the tape was shot Friday but did not say how it was acquired, also reported Craig Stebic’s sister from Iowa was present.

Stebic’s wife, Lisa, 37, has been missing since April 30. The couple was in the process of divorcing and Lisa Stebic was moving to evict her husband from their Plainfield home on the day of her disappearance, the Chicago Tribune has previously reported.

Another station source said the executives wanted to take some time to consider whether an ethical line had been breached and whether punishment was merited for her actions, which occurred on her day off. Reporters generally are encouraged to develop sources while maintaining professional detachment.

Channel 2 showed the tape to Michele Weldon, an assistant journalism professor at Northwestern University. “I mean, clearly this is a conflict of interest,” Weldon told the station. “It’s going to make the audience question, and her colleagues and her competitors question what else has she done.”

“I can’t talk,” Jacobson said Monday, referring calls to Whittaker and her agent, attorney Todd Musburger, who did not return calls.

Professional detachment, indeed.

Cubbies!

Posted by mesablue on June 22, 2007

It’s that time of year again. When the Cubs venture down to that mini-mall of a stadium that the White Sux call home.

So far Zambrano is on fire, striking out seven of the first nine batters. Cubs up 2-0 in the 4th.

Hawk Harrelson is such an idiot.

Heave the Hawk.

A Great Day for the White Sox!!

Posted by Wickedpinto on June 14, 2007

The starting line up did fantastic, no runs or hits scored, and the Bullpen, which has been disappointing followed through just as everyone has been hoping for the last several weeks and months of failure.

They kept their opponent from scoring a single run, and their offense did just as was expected.

Drawback?  The White Sox didn’t play today, and even though there wasn’t a game, this was probably the best game I’ve seen/not seen in more than a week.

It’s an average day for a chicago team right now (except for the fact that the cubs are on a 3 game winning streak!, and the Sox are sucking crap)

The point is?  THANK YOU White Sox for having today off, it’s the only day this week that I haven’t experienced dissappointment thanks to your failures.

geraldo

Posted by Wickedpinto on June 8, 2007

He don’t rate a proper noun capitalization.

MM is a racist supporting racial profiling, because geraldo has hispanic american children who will be pulled over.  WTF do yoy think will happen to michelles kids.  NEWSFLASH, michelle is brown, and from what I see more brown than geraldo. * more brown, but hotter, so that makes her an open target.

You think MM’s kids will be pulled over less than geraldo’s?

Michelle, the child of immigrants, is anti-immigrants, and hates families.

geraldo’s retarded.

This guy is so used to playing up his latin lover history at studio 54 that he doesn’t realize that MM isn’t just a minority, but a first generation child of immingrants/or immigrant, I forget.

Just cuz she’s hot she don’t rate the veritas of the harry reamesish value of geraldo?

FUCKING PLEASE!!!!!  (third, and most significant main page curse.)

*edit: I included some snark.

Cicada’s

Posted by Wickedpinto on May 27, 2007

So in the chicago area, the cicada’s have been going crazy for the last few days, luckily in my Indiana burb we don’t have to deal with that crap, but it covers the news waves at all times, when they surface, I think the last time I had to deal with this (other than okinawa in 1997, which is more than a little different) in the chicago area was in 93, maybe 94, I can’t remember exactly, cuz like I said, my burb don’t get them.

I decided to look into it anyways, and the first time I searched at yahoo, I found cicada recipes as the top post, then I found other things, but I think that “cicada recipe’s” really took the cake.

My only other experience with cicada’s made me almost visceraly terrified of the insectile flying terrorists, cuz in oki, and in asia in general the insects have NO respect, like they do here in the US.   Still, “cicada recipe’s” makes me think, I should never eat at that persons house.
