Don’t tell PETA

Posted by mesablue on December 24, 2006

They might want to get in on this action:

Macy’s pulls Sean John hooded jackets

NEW YORK – Macy’s has pulled from its shelves and its Web site two styles of Sean John hooded jackets, originally advertised as featuring faux fur, after an investigation by the nation’s largest animal protection organization concluded that the garments were actually made from a certain species of dog called “raccoon dog.”
“First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.

I don’t think a lot of people bought these coats specifically because they wanted faux fur. But, if just a few vegan types find out that they’ve been wearing Fido around town, it’ll warm my heart.

The folks at PETA could have made a lot of money if they sold some of the 15,000 dogs they’ve killed the last few years by freezing them, and tossing them in other peoples dumpsters. PETA has killed over 80% of the animals they have taken in for adoption since 1998 while pretending to be a protector of animals.

Seven things you didn’t know about PETA:

2) Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 14,400 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2005, PETA put to death over 90 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.

PETA Hates You:

Wizbang is Calling All Liberals!

Posted by mesablue on December 23, 2006

Wizbang has challenged their most ardent liberal commenters to step up to the plate and put their money where their mouth is.

Calling All Liberals

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a notoriously dead week in the blogosphere.

Given that, I would like to try an experiment. I’d like to invite our prominent lefty commenters – you know the ones who are so critical of the Wizbang writers all the time – to to submit blog posts for publication.

The plan is to publish pieces by these folks next week (in a addition to regular content) to see how those folks would do when they’re the authors and the rest of the Wizbang readership are the critics. Certainly there’s no shortage of topics to cover, what with Nancy and Harry’s coronation upcoming, the ISG report, etc.

Great idea.

It’s such a great idea that I’ve decided to challenge two of Wizbang’s most notorious liberal commenters to participate.

Lee and Mantis.

Lee seems to be an intelligent fellow who has bought into the entire “Dean Scream” version of Democratic politics. This guy has not met a talking point that he can’t repeat ten thousand times regardless of how off message it may be. Same old schtick.

Every. damn. day.

Come on Lee, let’s see what you’ve got.

Mantis started out as an annoying little flea without an original thought and has grown into the kind of blogosphere liberal that you can almost have a slight affection for. He’s still a bit young, but you can see the little thoughts in his mind start to mature over time. I wrote him off a while back and would love for him to come up with something worthy of the opportunity that Kevin at Wizbang is giving him.

If Lee and/or Mantis contribute an article to Wizbang that is not just a cut and paste hack job of whacko lefty blog screeds — I will make a contribution to the charity of their choice. I’m not rich, but I will make a nominal contribution in their name.

I will also post their text here in it’s entirety — without any comment.

Let’s get in on!

Does this car make my ass look big?

Posted by mesablue on December 23, 2006

Some guy named Joe Bloggs left a comment on my Christmas Story post. Since I tend to be a little curious, I checked out his site. My eyes are still bleeding after this one. And, since I am not one to suffer alone, I want to share this with anyone stupid enough to click on the following link.

“Fat shrines like this will become a thing of the past”, said Madden pointing to the donut shop. Under the new Labor policy fat people can now be shot on sight for one month of each year. To participate in what many are calling The Calorie Cull, fat hunters must hold a current sporting shooters license.

“Look we’ve given this a lot of thought. We don’t want just anybody taking pot shots at Fatty Boombas,” explained Madden, “There has to be controls. You have to be registered and there is a bag limit – five Fatty Boombas per hunter each Fat Season.”

Butts had been a strong supporter of the ALP in the past.

“I’ve always voted Labor so I can’t help feeling let down right now,” said a nervous Butts as gunshots were heard in the distance.

“I’ve got a long trip ahead of me so with four kebabs in me guts I shouldn’t run out of gas.”

And Flabby Flapps, chairwoman of the Fat Feminists Fellowship, was just as outraged. “I’m out of here!” the normally unflappable Flapps said in such a rush to leave town she’d forgotten to get dressed.

“Inside every fat person there is a thin person trying to get out,” sobbed Flapps.

“That’s because they ate one!” laughed Madden.

You have been warned.

Al Qaeda and the Democrats

Posted by mesablue on December 22, 2006

ABC News — The Blotter: Al Qaeda Sends a Message to Democrats

Al Qaeda has sent a message to leaders of the Democratic party that credit for the defeat of congressional Republicans belongs to the terrorists.

In a portion of the tape from al Qaeda No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri, made available only today, Zawahri says he has two messages for American Democrats.

“The first is that you aren’t the ones who won the midterm elections, nor are the Republicans the ones who lost. Rather, the Mujahideen — the Muslim Ummah’s vanguard in Afghanistan and Iraq — are the ones who won, and the American forces and their Crusader allies are the ones who lost,” Zawahri said, according to a full transcript obtained by ABC News.

Zawahri calls on the Democrats to negotiate with him and Osama bin Laden, not others in the Islamic world who Zawahri says cannot help.

Don’t expect to see too much coverage of this through the main stream media outlets. They hate having their face rubbed in the truth — again.

Liberal Larry’s Christmas survival tips

Posted by mesablue on December 22, 2006

From Blame Bush!

Liberal Larry’s Christmas Survival Tips:

Four shopping days left until the Winter Solstice, and despite our best efforts to suck every last ounce of joy out of the holiday season there are still some Christians out there who insist on turning Christmas into one big religious hoorah. It’s therefore incumbent upon us as progressives to take whatever steps necessary to not only protect the sacred Wall Between Church and State from such proselytizing fanatics, but our impressionable children from the soft bigotry of Christian imagery.

So before I crawl under the sink for the remainder of the holiday, I’d like to leave you with a few quick tips that will help defend you and yours against the cultural disease known as Christmas.

Read it all.

Rape charges dropped against Duke lacrosse players

Posted by mesablue on December 22, 2006

In the “it’s about freaking time” catagory, Rapes charges dropped against Duke lacrosse players.

Chicago Tribune

DURHAM, N.C — Prosecutors dropped rape charges Friday against three Duke University lacrosse players accused of attacking a stripper at a team party, a defense attorney said.

Turns out the stripper lied. Strippers lie?

Who’da thunk? Nifong is an idiot, I hope this comes back and bites him in the ass.

Who’d have thought that Wickedpinto and a singing babe could do so much?

Linking them at Ace of Spades might have had a little to do with it. Heh.

Update: Well, that was fun while it lasted. Had a nice run, now dropping faster than a Zoloft to the bottom of a plastic cup of warm Val-U-Rite vodka. If you don’t get that — don’t ask, it’s not worth it.

550,000 blogs on WordPress and comment spam is killing my fun for the day.

Oh well, I learned the power of the Ace juju and that Wickedpinto is worth at least 200 hits per post.

That last part kind of scares me.

Update to the update: That last bit of link whoring above just might push me back to the top. I hope that I have the odd luck it will take to visit the WordPress page during the few seconds that I make it to number one.

This really is supposed to be a good blog.

#1 doesn’t suck, though.

Let ’em eat foie gras

Posted by mesablue on December 21, 2006

Chicago Tribune:

When the letter came from City Hall threatening punishment if he continued to serve foie gras at his North Side restaurant, Doug Sohn framed the warning and set it beside his cash register.

In another example of government run amok, the Chicago City Council outlawed the sale of foie gras in restaurants and stores in the city.

So, how has that been received in Chicago?

Almost four months after an ordinance went into effect that forbids serving the rich delicacy, many chefs and restauranteurs are shrugging, if not thumbing their noses, at a law that has led to charges of an overly invasive City Council.

Several restaurants are so brazen, they list foie gras on their online menus.

At least one elected official has some sense:

Mayor Richard Daley is no fan of the ban–just this week, he called it “the silliest law” the City Council has ever passed.

Life after the ban:

As he did before the ban, David Richards, owner of Sweets & Savories, has two foie gras dishes on the menu, which are two of his most expensive: a Kobe beef burger topped with foie gras pate and seared foie gras accompanied by pumpkin flan.

“We look at it as a choice,” he said. “We live in a free-market society and if people are truly offended they won’t buy it. If they don’t buy it, I won’t buy it.”

Instead, he said, his foie gras sales have climbed, making him even less inclined to heed the law. But just in case, he has talked with a couple of attorneys who double as loyal customers that told him they are ready to fight any citation on his behalf.

New York bans trans fat and Chicago finds duck and goose livers dangerous enough to outlaw?

It’s good to hear that the Chicago Department of Health is not wasting it’s resources tracking down dangerous duck liver panderers while they are hard pressed to just keep up with more important issues. But, how does a law like this even make it past early ridicule?

This is Moral Authority run wild. I can almost understand the trans fat law in New York, trans fat has no real redeeming value. But, wasting time and city resources passing a law to protect us from the sweet, wonderful, smooth taste of foie gras because a tiny portion of society objects to the way the geese and ducks were fed is rediculous.

I know what I’m going to order the next time I’m back home in Chicago. Mmmmm.

Update:Jay Tea at Wizbang has an article up about this issue — Playing pate cake with the law

Michael Totten does it again.

Posted by mesablue on December 21, 2006

Michael Totten snuck out of the country and into Lebanon for three weeks– at least as far as we know as of today. He last did this when he went to the Kurdish area of Northern Iraq — The Kurds Go Their Own Way.

Michael has spent plenty of time in Lebanon in the past, having lived their previously. I’m sure that with everything that has happened there in the last six months he was aching to find out how the country was doing since he’d been there last. He was more recently in Israel just across the border from Hezbollah controlled Southern Lebanon during the latest conflict.

In fact, he’s spent time with and interviewed Hezbollah members — A Meal to Remember With Hezbollah.

Be sure to visit Michael Totten’s blog over the next few weeks to read about his travels. Michael is one of the best writers on the web and tells his story with an unbiased voice. He provides a much needed perspective into the goings on of the real Middle East from a westerner’s point of view. If you spend an hour reading Michael you will know several times more about the events of Lebanon, Israel, Iraq and Syria than you did previously.

Michael, glad you are back safe and can’t wait for the next report.

Rabbit chomping in Iraq?

Posted by mesablue on December 20, 2006

While it’s important that the Iraqi army and police force re-establish itself and provide a balancing presence in the country, their tactics may be a little weird at times.

Via LGF:

The Incredibly Strange Graduation of the Iraqi Anti-Rabbit Police Commando Geeks.

U.S. troops turn over Najaf to Iraqis:

NAJAF, Iraq – U.S. forces ceded control of southern Najaf province to Iraqi police and soldiers, who marked the occasion Wednesday with a parade and martial arts demonstrations.

Home to 930,000 people, Najaf saw heavy fighting two years ago, but has been relatively peaceful lately. It was the third of Iraq’s 18 provinces to come under local control. British troops handed over southern Muthana province in July, and the Italian military transferred neighboring Dhi Qar in September.

About 1,500 police officers, soldiers and security personnel staged a parade around an infield of stubby brown grass, in festivities complete with warriors on horseback.

At one point, a small group of soldiers stepped forward with a live rabbit and tore it to pieces. The leader bit out the heart with a yell, then passed around the blood-soaked remains to his comrades, each of whom took a bite. The group also bit the heads off frogs, as some of those in the crowd held their noses from the stench.

Chewing on live animals is a traditional display of ferocity for elite troops in Iraq and was also observed by special units during Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Police then steered shiny new cruisers and motorcycles with ribbons and flowers stuck to their windshields around a track ringing the soccer field, which was still littered with fur and discarded frog legs.

“Our soldiers do a lot of things, but I’ve never seen them do anything like that,” said Maj. Gen. Kurt Cichowski, who attended the ceremony

If you have the stomach for it, Charles found pictures. Here and here.
