Global warming is not your fault!

Posted by mesablue on March 11, 2007

Or mine. Or Al (manbearpig) Gore’s, even if he does use more than twenty times the electricity and fuel than anyone else.

It’s not even the smelly hippies fault who have turned global warming into some kind of religion.

Before you run out to buy carbon credits for your dog’s farts — watch this video:

The Great Global Warming Swindle from British Channel Four.

Dan from, Riehl World View has this take:

I was able to view the British documentary The Great Global Warming Scandal which, interesting enough, contained more science in debunking Global Warming than I have yet to see produced by the Global Warming crowd. I’ll bullet point the arguments against the Global Warming craze in a later post, but the most amazing revelation was that, indeed, in great part we do have Margaret Thatcher to thank for today’s Global Warming theory.

The original theory was from a fringe scientist and when it surfaced nearly all mainstream scientists found it laughable. Man’s contribution to CO2 in the atmosphere is so small when compared to the contributions from volcanoes, plants and especially the oceans, it’s doubtful man could effect anything, let alone climate, by producing CO2. But Thatcher had a problem and a plan.

The previous government had been brought down by a devastating and violent coal mine strike and another strike came along as she was in office. Being determined to break the cycle of labor, a large part of it being coal miners, reeking such havoc and ultimately dictating terms to the government, she was determined to move the country away from coal as a power source.

Not trusting Middle Eastern oil as a power source that would produce stability , she wanted to move Britain toward nuclear energy in a major way. The strongest selling point was that nuclear energy was clean and she seized upon the CO2 theory, reasoning that if she could increase concern over coal, she’d be able to implement plans to begin building nuclear reactors.

Millions of government dollars were placed on the table at Britain’s National Academy of Science to produce specific science that heightened concerns over CO2 as a serious health and environmental concern. The meme, if you will, and the dollars available to scientists for such work grew, in Britain and across Europe and even in the US. It was the seed of the Global Warming industry we see today.

The film, relying upon several credible scientists, pretty much destroyed the current theory of Global Warming, including Gore’s film, repeatedly citing specific science from MIT to the National Academy that conflicts with the theory and demonstrates how science is being manipulated to support the GW movement today.

Talk about the law of unintended consequences.

I went way beyond fair use and copied his entire post because, well, I had to. He sums up the story very well.

The video is worth watching for it’s common sense approach to the so called “science” of global warming. You’ll know more about both sides of the issue after watching.

Over the past hundred thousand years or so, according to ice core samples, temperatures have risen almost eight hundred years before a corresponding rise in CO2 levels.

What drives our climate change? What huge force has done so for millions of years?

The Sun.

I have no interest in conspiracy theories, including this week’s concerning evildoers who seek to trick the world into conserving energy. What does interest me is that the producers have misrepresented the scientific information. Here are their arguments, with the facts:

    1) Solar activity explains past changes in Earth’s temperature.

No one challenges this notion. It’s clear that when the CO2 level was lower and unchanging, solar activity was the main driving force. That’s changed since 1900, and now CO2 concentration is a bigger driver than solar activity.

    2) Industry can’t run on solar panels. Avoiding global warming will condemn developing countries to permanent poverty.

This is absolutely true. If the world doesn’t go to nuclear energy we’ll face serious economic difficulties worldwide. Of course, this doesn’t challenge the reality of global warming.

    3) Temperatures dropped between 1940 and 1970, even though CO2 levels rose.

Pollution during and after the war, when industrial activity was raised to unprecedented levels, caused temperatures to decline. As is the case for natural particulates and aerosols, artificial particulates and aerosols have a cooling effect by reflecting sunlight and by causing clouds to form. About 1970, serious efforts were started to control particulate emissions from fossil-burning power plants, and the temperature graph clearly shows that global warming accelerated.

    4) CO2 levels possibly lag behind temperatures by 800 years or so.

First, this possibility depends on proxy data, since records don’t go back that far. But I think it’s true because it’s so consistent. If it is true, it’s not good news. The proxy records show what you’d expect anyway: global warming causes greenhouse gases. Since greenhouse gases cause global warming (an inescapable fact of physics), we could face a compounding effect, where greenhouse-gas concentration and temperature reinforce each other all the way to the worst case. This is the possibility that causes the most concern.

    5) Troposphere data don’t reflect the same degree of heating as would be expected.

This is outdated, incorrect information. Here’s a quotation from the Executive Summary of the Climate Change Science Program Synthesis and Analysis Product 1.1:

“Previously reported discrepancies between the amount of warming near the surface and higher in the atmosphere have been used to challenge the reliability of climate models and the reality of humaninduced global warming. Specifically, surface data showed substantial global-average warming, while early versions of satellite and radiosonde data showed little or no warming above the surface. This significant discrepancy no longer exists because errors in the satellite and radiosonde data have been identified and corrected. New data sets have also been developed that do not show such discrepancies.”

    6) Artificial emissions aren’t sufficient to explain the increase in CO2 concentrations. Natural emissions are greater.

This is plainly false. According to the International Energy Agency’s “Key World Energy Statistics”, there are 26,883 million tons of CO2 being emitted from artificial sources per year. That is 0.87% of the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, the concentration of which is rising roughly 0.5%/year. So, if 60% of the emitted CO2 stays in the atmosphere, it explains all of the increase. But it’s true that other greenhouse gases are contributing as well.

    7) Solar activity matches temperatures in the last 100 years better than CO2 concentrations, especially 1940-1970

This is also plainly false. Solar activity clearly increased between 1940 and 1960, but temperatures dropped (as explained in #3). Furthermore, and more importantly, solar activity peaked in 1980, but temperatures have continued to rise. The only factor that can explain this is CO2 concentration.

As you can see, all of the arguments are either irrelevant or false.

I think the reason people are so quick to reject global warming as a reality is that the subject is discussed in bits and pieces. I’ve made a good-faith effort to present the facts about global warming in a coherent manner. It’s on a web page called Global Warming: A Guide for the Perplexed.

I have been reading about this story for much of today. It has interesting watching the pitched battle taking place. The flimsiest counter points have been directed at the cooling period between 1940 and 1970 and the Troposphere temperature data.

The cooling period has been explained away as the result of aerosol and particulate pollution that interrupted an overall trend of temperature increases. Particulate and aerosol pollution was eliminated in 1970 and caused the immediate reversal and sustained resumption of the temperature rise that previously ended 1939. Who said this stuff ain’t exciting?

Secondly, the Troposphere temperature data doesn’t point to a fault in the model because….(wait for it)……we change the satellite data!!!!

Grownups don’t fall for these types of excuses.
