Absolute stupidity

Posted by mesablue on April 7, 2007

Michigan leads the nation in unemployment. We are facing a billion dollar deficit.

While the rest of the country enjoys a strong economy, Michigan is bleeding jobs and people.

So, what do Michigan democrats want to do about it? Well, the governor wants to raise our taxes and the democrats in the State House want to give every kid an iPod.

Yup, you read that correctly, they want to spend millions buying iPods.

From an appropriately titled editorial in The Detroit News:

An iPod for every kid? Are they !#$!ing idiots?

We have come to the conclusion that the crisis Michigan faces is not a shortage of revenue, but an excess of idiocy. Facing a budget deficit that has passed the $1 billion mark, House Democrats Thursday offered a spending plan that would buy a MP3 player or iPod for every school child in Michigan.

No cost estimate was attached to their hare-brained idea to “invest” in education. Details, we are promised, will follow.

The Democrats, led by their increasingly erratic speaker Andy Dillon of Redford Township, also pledge $100 million to make better downtowns.

Their plan goes beyond cluelessness. Democrats are either entirely indifferent to the idea that extreme hard times demand extreme belt tightening, or they are bone stupid. We lean toward the latter.

We say that because the House plan also keeps alive, again without specifics, the promise of tax hikes.

The range of options, according to Rep. Steve Tobocman, D-Detroit, includes raising the income tax, levying a 6 percent tax on some services, and taxing junk food and soda.

We wonder how financially strained Michigan residents will feel about paying higher taxes to buy someone else’s kid an iPod.

Lunacy.

Three more years. Just three more years, I keep telling myself, until my kids are out of school and I can leave this crazy place.

Usually, a metropolitan area has two newspapers: one which tries to be the local equivalent of the NY Times, and another one, which is more conservative. A good example example of this is Boston, which has the NY Times-owned Boston Globe (guess which way its editorials tilt?) and the more conservative Boston Herald.

So, my question is, which newspaper is the Detroit News?

Well, look on the bright side – maybe your kids will get the iPods & you can sell them on eBay to offset a little of the tax increase?
Really, how do these idiots think this is going to help?

I need an interpreter for #3. Back to the main post. Democrats have ruined Michigan and the people are so stupid, they keep electing them over and over again. They deserve what they get. They just closed 34 schools in the city of Detroit (it should have been closer to 50), in order to save some money with so many people leaving the city. Maybe they should consider buying a few bulldozers.

    OM,

The Detroit News is the more conservative paper in town. But, The Detroit Free Press almost went under several years ago — during a strike, go figure. The papers both now operate as one unit under a JOA that allows for separate editorial staff. Both papers are a bit weak and this editorial uses a lot stronger language than I’m used to seeing from The News.

The Free Press probably thinks that this idea will save the planet.

Imagine the TV commercial for Guinness with the character saying “Brilliant!” That’s the Democrats.

“…bone stupid.” Now that is what a sane person would say. Some citizen of your state need to walk into the House chambers and demand in a loud and menacing voice “Who is the dumbass motherfucker that introduced this iPod-for-everyone piece of shit?” in a Gunnery Sergeant Hartman voice.

That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen a legislature propose.

Being from Maine, land of “laptops for every seventh grader,” that’s saying something.

What, exactly, is the rationale for this?

Well, you’ve just hit one of the many reasons I’m glad I left Michigan.

Nice blog here; I’ll link to you when I get a chance.
