Dinner blogging — bacon wrapped steak

Posted by mesablue on November 30, 2007

So, I have some bacon left over from the bacon wrapped turkey that I made for T-Day and I got a box of Omaha Steaks the other day.

What to do?

Bacon wrapped New York strip steaks? Sounds good to me.

First, season with fresh ground pepper and salt — then wrap those suckers:

Toss them in the pan:

Cook until a perfect 139 degrees internal temperature:

Any questions?

This guy spammed me. Check out his crappy video.

If you are going to put out a music video shouldn’t you be able to, you know, sing?

And, did this guy buy carbon offsets for all of the energy wasted in the creation of this video?

Update: Welcome Coastal Conservation League goofballs. Here’s a clue, if you don’t want someone to make fun of your ridiculous little video, don’t spam their site with links to it.

Heh, cross posted at Ace of Spades HQ.

Words don’t suck

Posted by mesablue on November 27, 2007

I’m stealing this from Nice Deb because it’s a good idea and I’m now hooked on the thing and can’t stop.

FreeRice is a vocabulary game that donates, yup you got it — rice, through the United Nations World Food Program. For each word that you get right ten grains are donated. It can add up quickly. I’m into the tens of thousands now. Told ya I was hooked.

Now, if they would just come up with GrammarRice — I could get some real learnin’.

The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The World Food Program is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. In addition to providing food, the World Food Program helps hungry people to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good. Wherever possible, the World Food Program buys food locally to support local farmers and the local economy. We encourage you to visit the United Nations World Food Program to learn more about their successful approach to ending hunger.

I’m stuck on level 45 and can’t get past it. Get over there and see if you can beat me.

Clothes? I don’t need no stinking clothes!

Posted by mesablue on November 21, 2007

At least that’s how it played out tonight in the state that is trying to give Florida a run for the money for weirdest news on a daily basis.

Naked man walking: saga on I-94

Motorists call about freeway wanderer; police use stun gun

The Michigan State Police said a trooper used a stun gun to restrain a man who was walking naked in traffic on I-94 in Ann Arbor on Monday evening.

Troopers responded to the area of eastbound I-94 near Stone School Road at about 7:20 p.m. after receiving calls from motorists about a naked man walking in the center lane of the freeway, said Sgt. Chris Pascoe of the Ypsilanti Post.

The troopers saw the man wandering in the freeway but he would not respond to verbal commands and resisted their attempts to get him out of danger, Pascoe said.

Did I mention that it’s pretty cold in Michigan in late November?

Send a troop a text for turkey day

Posted by mesablue on November 20, 2007

America Supports You: Americans Can Text ‘Thanks’ to Troops

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2007 – For those seeking a quick way to show appreciation for the troops’ service far from home this holiday season, look no further than “Giving Thanks,” a new initiative from the Defense Department’s America Supports You program.

Americans can send text messages of thanks and get responses from active-duty troops through the “Giving Thanks” initiative of the Defense Department’s America Supports You program.

America Supports You connects citizens and corporations with military personnel and their families serving at home and abroad.

“This is a simple way to connect our citizens to our soldiers using modern technology,” Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense for internal communications and public liaison, said of the text messaging program.

The program, which already has received nearly 4,000 messages, officially kicks off at 6 a.m. EST Nov. 17 and concludes at midnight PST Nov. 22. Between those times, people wishing to express gratitude to the troops for their service can text a brief message to 89279. Each text message sent will receive a response from an active-duty servicemember in return.

Major mobile wireless providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile, will provide access to the Giving Thanks text messaging program.

“We know that thousands of families will be sitting down for Thanksgiving dinner and thinking about loved ones who are far away from home serving their country,” Barber said. “We are counting on other American families to take a moment during their holiday celebration to think of those families and their family members who are serving and say, ‘Thanks.’

C’mon. Give it a shot. It’ll take just a few seconds and you’ll make some troop’s day.

Lightning Drunks strike twice.

Posted by mesablue on November 20, 2007

What’s better than more weird news from Michigan?

Weird news from Michigan that involves two random drunk drivers — plowing into the same building.

At the same time.

Drunk drivers slam into same business

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police said two men face drunken driving charges after losing control of their cars and simultaneously driving into the same business.

WDIV-TV said the 21-and 22-year-old drivers were heading north on Milford Road in western Oakland County’s Highland Township, when both lost control of their vehicles and drove into the Carpet Classic Floor Studio.

Police say the drivers ran from their cars, but deputies tracked them down at their nearby homes.

Authorities are still investigating.

They may have been racing and wiped each other out. But, I prefer to imagine that they both just sort of arrived at the same location within seconds of each other. That must have freaked them out, huh?

CNN’s Plantapalooza

Posted by mesablue on November 20, 2007

Remember those “undecided” voters that asked questions at the Democratic presidential debate on CNN last week?

Well, so did quite a few people around the blogosphere. It turns out that most of them were plants. Democratic activists and former staffers.

CNN. Not even trying to hide the bias anymore.

You’d think that they’d try a little harder when attempting to put one over on us after being caught out so many times in recent years.

No credibility whatsoever.

Update: Gateway Pundit has a Lovely Box of Plants.

Also, an excellent roundup at D=S.

Protesters Arrested for Attempting to Block Military Cargo in Olympia, WA

OLYMPIA, Wash — At least three more protesters were arrested Sunday as demonstrations continued against shipments of military cargo through the Port of Olympia.

Others were sprayed with pepper spray by police as they tried to block trucks hauling equipment to Fort Lewis after it was unloaded from a ship carrying the gear back from Iraq.

Protests at the port began Tuesday, after the USNS Brittin arrived and began unloading equipment that had been used in Iraq by the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from Fort Lewis.

I’m guessing Dark Moody (my most recent pathetic troll) was there.

They were protesting shipments that were coming back from Iraq.

Aren’t you guys a little late?

This stuff was coming back from ChimpyMcHalliburton’s private war for oil. You should be cheering. If you haven’t been paying attention, the surge worked. So now we are pulling troops and equipment out — not the other way around.

At the port’s gates, protesters wearing goggles and other protective gear withstood several rounds of pepper spray but were physically removed by officers who picked them up and threw them away from the road they had blocked, The Olympian newspaper reported.

One protester, Andrew Yankey, told The Olympian that officers removed protesters’ protective goggles and sprayed them directly in the face.

“I was dragged and sprayed in the face repeatedly,” he said. “My goggles were ripped off my face and stolen.”

Dude, that sucks. Really.

I’m sure that the brave young men and women of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division feel your pain. Or not, you pathetic little douchebag.

I’m getting sick and tired of leftie idiots whining about having their patriotism questioned. Well, this proves it. They have no patriotism to question. They hate this country and everything that it stands for. Why else would they have a protest when troops are returning home?

What did these scumbags do before there were Starbucks and the Internet?

The Democratic party is finding out just how little these life suckers really matter in the grand scheme. They don’t actually contribute anything. Being associated with them is instant political death. Who was that guy that Lieberman ran against? Right, no one remembers. Just like no one will remember these crap weasels in a few years. But, that doesn’t mean we have to tolerate their immature tantrums. This is not about free speech. Moonbats don’t care anything about free speech. They care about their agenda — and nothing else.

France finally figured out the damage that people like this can do to their society.

We are far from having to worry on that scale. But, it’s getting ridiculous.

Tolerance only goes so far. When these spoiled little brats violate the law to hold unpeaceful protests, they should be forced to deal with the consequences of their actions — under the law.

No quarter.

REAL electronic music

Posted by mesablue on November 7, 2007

Music made by electricity and air. No speakers or sound equipment.

In this clip, “the music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating — there are no speakers involved.”

The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software

Nightclub applications of this could be pretty cool.

Watch out for falling — cows?

Posted by mesablue on November 6, 2007

More weird news, this time not from Michigan, but to make sure that the universe stays in proper alignment…

Falling cow lands on Westland couple’s minivan

MANSON, Wash. — A Westland couple celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary in Washington State barely escaped disaster when a 600-pound cow fell 200 feet and landed on the hood of their minivan.

The county fire chief says the couple were lucky they weren’t killed by the cow that fell off a cliff as they drove on a highway on Sunday.

The van was heavily damaged, including a broken windshield.

Charles Everson says he kept repeating, “I don’t believe this. I don’t believe this.”

Westland, if you haven’t guessed already, is in — Michigan.

It’s about time

Posted by mesablue on November 6, 2007

I went to the polls today — and had to show a valid ID before I could vote. Excellent.

Voter fraud in Michigan, more exactly, in Detroit, has been rampant in past elections.

The law requiring that voters be required to present a picture ID or sign an affidavit before voting was passed in 1996. Because of interference by the ACLU and NAACP, it wasn’t until July of this year that Michigan Supreme Court decided that the law was constitutional.

Predictably, against all outward appearances of no problems whatsoever, the NAACP had this to say:

NAACP: Detroit voting ‘messy’ due to ID requirement

DETROIT — Officials from the Detroit Branch NAACP monitoring voting this morning say the process is “messy” because of the new photo identification requirement.

Melvin “Butch” Hollowell, general counsel to the Detroit NAACP, said there was one report of a voter being turned away in the city for not having an ID. He didn’t have any more specifics and was investigating.

He also said there has been confusion in the Detroit City Clerk’s Office over which affidavits to give to voters when they don’t have a photo ID. He said that one of the NAACP monitors witnessed a voter instead being given an affidavit for a provisional ballot that is set aside for six days until a voter can prove his or her identity.

One report is “messy?” Give me a break.

But clerk officials said that there have been no problems with election workers giving out the wrong affidavits.

“There has been no confusion,” said Daniel Baxter, director of the Department of Elections.

In July, the Michigan Supreme Court decided that a 1996 law requiring voters to either show a picture ID or sign an affidavit is constitutional and enforceable.

Voters need a Michigan driver’s license, state-issued personal ID card or other acceptable form of ID. Those without photo ID at the polls must sign an affidavit attesting to that fact before they can receive a ballot that will be counted with all others.

Elsewhere, elections officials reported few problems with the launch of the ID requirement.

Secretary of State spokeswoman Kelly Chesney said Michigan election workers reported that “the process has been smooth and orderly.”

Chesterfield Township Clerk Kelly Jo Smolarek has experienced no problems today with the new voter identification law.

“Everyone has been very receptive,” Smolarek said. “We have not had one negative comment. In fact, some people are saying it is about time.”

One of Sunlight’s resident creative geniuses (yes, there are many of them) have taken all the Defense Appropriations Earmarks and made them available for viewing within Google Earth.

Spend a while browsing with Google Earth. It’s eye opening/mind numbing.

No big surprise that most of it seems to be in the bluest areas of the bluest states.

John Kerry — throw me under the bus again, please!

Posted by mesablue on November 6, 2007

John Kerry, not one to know when to slink away quietly into oblivion, now claims to have the goods on the Swift Boats for Truth folks.

Kerry says he has the goods on those eeevil Swift Boaters

The 63-year-old Democratic senator told The Patriot-Ledger on Tuesday that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group of Navy servicemen who served with Kerry and criticized his record in Vietnam, will be revealed as liars.

“We have put together a documented portfolio that frankly puts their lies in such a total light of absurdity and indecency, that should they ever rear their ugly heads again, we have every single ‘t’ crossed and ‘i’ dotted, and I welcome that in a sense,” Kerry said after addressing Boston’s South Shore Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a shame we weren’t able to produce all that at the time.”

This will be interesting. He could have ended all talk about this before the election that he lost if he would have kept his promise to release his complete military records. That was what? Three years ago? Still waiting…

Of course, he didn’t want us to know the truth then and it will be interesting to see what version of the truth he cooks up now.

Don’t miss this revelation, no doubt to be announced on his “Christmas in Cambodia” holiday special on MSNBC next month. Make sure to wear your magic hat while watching.
